PHILOSOPHY OF Education
I BELIEVE THAT…
special and general educators need to work together as a team to support a student.
parents are integral to student success.
trauma informed teaching is essential for all students.
a community of culture and diversity leads to acceptance and social change.
the role of the school is to give students the tools they need to succeed as an individual, a community member, and a global citizen.
Philosophy of Teaching
I believe that…
all students are able to learn.
students should have choices over their education.
students should be set up to be life-long learners.
teachers need to encourage students to be risk takers in education.
global education is vital to the citizenship of students.
the fine arts should be integrated into general education lessons.
students should know that their teacher cares about and respects them.
lessons should invite higher level thinking skills.
learning should be discussion-based.

students should be encouraged to develop their own arguments.
learning should be active, visual, verbal, and kinesthetic.
teaching should be adapted to meet individual needs of students.
lessons should scaffold ideas.

teachers need to know their students as individuals.
students need wait time between questions and answers.
tasks need to demand high levels of cognitive engagement.

PHILOSOPHY OF SOCIAL STUDIES
I BELIEVE THAT…
quality social studies instruction is a critical way to change our society.
social studies should follow the inquiry-based method of teaching.
history should be taught through multiple perspectives and lenses.
social studies should teach powerful social understanding.
social studies should be to create global awareness.
major themes and understanding are more important than memorization of facts.
discussion should connect ideas of the past with those of the present and future.
opposing points of view should be respected in social studies.
students should be taught how to communicate ideas effectively and respectfully.
students should be taught how to cite evidence of primary and secondary sources.
student ideas are important to developing conversations about social issues.
history and politics should be balanced regardless of a teacher’s personal views.

technology should be utilized in literacy lessons.
students should have opportunities to practice public speaking.

teachers should consistently hold students to their personal expectations.

experiments are important to developing student understanding.
the scientific method should be both taught and practiced.
students should develop scientific skills and thought processes while learning content as well.
science should relate to student interest and curiosities.
science should be inquiry- based.
engineering is important to a balanced science curriculum.
students should identify patterns in real world phenomenon to explain them.
teachers should work towards encouraging students coming up with their own questions and ideas about how the world works.
models are important for phenomenon we can not observe.
students should have multiple experiences with ideas before they draw conclusions about them.
the EPE model is effective in teaching science curriculum.
science talks can help students communicate ideas effectively.
experiments should be hands-on whenever possible.
